Should grades be replaced by portfolio based assessment? Or competency based assessment??

Reimagining Assessment Methods

@Ridafatima95
As a teacher, I think both portfolio-based assessment and competency-based assessment have their merits, and it ultimately depends on the learning objectives and needs of the students. Portfolio-based assessment provides a holistic view of a student's learning journey, showcasing their progress, growth, and accomplishments over time. It allows students to reflect on their own learning and demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a more nuanced way. On the other hand, competency-based assessment focuses on measuring specific skills and knowledge, ensuring that students have mastered the required competencies before progressing. I think a balanced approach that incorporates elements of both could be effective. By using portfolios to track student progress and competency-based assessments to evaluate mastery, we can get a more comprehensive picture of student learning and better prepare them for success in their future endeavors. -
In my point of view grades should be replaced because they just shows number not students learning, capacity and creativity. Competency based learning show how much student know and can do and indeed portfolio shows their creativity in portfolio and progress over time. These methods are more student cantered, more meaningful to assess their learning and capabilities.that way students would be focused on learning not just getting marks and grades

Both portfolio-based and competency-based assessments offer meaningful alternatives to traditional grades.
Portfolios showcase a student’s growth, creativity, and depth over time, providing a richer picture than a single test score. Competency-based assessment focuses on mastery of skills and knowledge, ensuring students truly understand before moving forward.
Replacing grades with these approaches can promote deeper learning and reduce stress, but successful implementation requires clear standards and teacher support. What’s your take?

Both portfolio-based and competency-based assessments offer valuable alternatives to traditional grades. Portfolio assessments showcase a student’s growth and creativity over time, while competency-based assessments focus on mastering specific skills. Ideally, combining both can give a fuller picture of a student’s abilities beyond just grades. What do you think? -
@Alwesha Traditional marks should be replaced, as they only reflect numbers, not true learning.
Competency-based learning highlights what students actually know and can do.
Portfolios are a great way to showcase student creativity and growth over time.
These methods are more meaningful and student-centered.
They help students focus on learning, not just chasing grades. -
@Ridafatima95 These assessments require students to demonstrate their understanding and skills through tasks like presentations, projects, or problem-solving.
-
@Zymal492cb0cdb1 This type of assessment focuses on real-world situations and encourages students to apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts.
-
@Alwesha This ongoing assessment provides feedback to students and teachers throughout the learning process, helping to guide instruction and student learning.
-
@Mariya These assessments focus on demonstrating mastery of specific skills and knowledge rather than time spent on learning.
-
@Awais-Qarnee This approach focuses more on learning and less on grades, providing alternative ways to assess student progress and development.
