Helping students develop a sense of purpose begins with intentional questioning. When we ask them “Why are you creating this?” or “What are you trying to express?”, we invite them to look inward. Purpose often takes shape when students connect their creations to personal experiences, emotions, or issues that matter to them. Giving them space to explore and reflect helps that sense of purpose evolve organically.

As for emotional depth, I believe it can be nurtured. While lived experience plays a powerful role, teachers can guide students through reflection through journaling, discussion, and exposure to emotionally resonant works of art. Creating room for vulnerability and honest expression in the classroom gives emotional depth a place to grow.
Keeping authenticity alive in digital art is perhaps our greatest challenge today. With so many tools offering polished results instantly, the process can feel diluted. But we can preserve authenticity by emphasizing the journey, not just the outcome. Encouraging students to show their drafts, share their struggles, and explain their choices can help keep their voice at the center of their digital work.
