Brain Cambourne suggested that students learn language best when certain conditions are met. They are as follows:
- Immersion
- Demonstration
- Engagement
- Expectations
- Responsibility
- Approximation
- Employment
Immersion means surrounding children with great literacy materials.
Demonstration means modeling good literacy for students.
Engagement means active participation of students
Expectations means students should know what they do in each lesson and teachers should believe that their all students are able to succeed in each lesson.
Responsibility means recognizes that students ultimately decide if they are going to learn or not. So, students should be given a certain degree of choice in what material they read an what subjects they write and talk about.
Approximation means acknowledgement that not everyone sample of students work will be perfect. Sometimes it is important to accept work as good enough especially if the students has worked very hard to get that point.
Employment means actually using the skills taught in a lesson. This often occurs during the independent practice phase of a lesson plan, but it can happen in other situations as well.
