I DON'T LIKE SCHOOL...
These were the lines of a student while asking him why he was absent many days from school.
As a class teacher, I was astonished at why he said that he doesn't like school.
This kind of reply can make us think about why learners do not like and hate to study at school.
If we analyze this sentence, then we get to know about some of the factors that force students to make their behavior like the above statement.
As I am thinking that these can be the reasons, such as .
corporal punishment or physical punishment
Traditional Teaching Methods (Teacher-Centered Class)
- No extracurricular activities
No physical education
Lack of activity-based teaching
- Communication Gap.
7.Bad classroom/school environment conditions
No use of effective lesson plan implementation.
These above can be factors, as I felt that can be the major reason for a learner's negative behavior towards the education or school study.
I am here. Asad Nazeer, a public sector school teacher, has been teaching students there for two years in a small town, Kotri, Sindh, Pakistan.
When I joined the public sector school, I realized that there are so many problems, and it was a bit difficult for me to cater to all these in one week of school when they made me a class teacher, and I was very excited to know my new students.
Within one week of a class, I got to know about my students' hobbies, likes and dislikes, and their behavior towards learning. As a guide, I need to know about their learning needs, so I did a SWOT analysis.Through this, I knew that they were fed up with school.
These things were making me sad and forcing me to do something to find solutions to these problems. In the public sector school where you are facing many difficulties, how to fix it was a big, challenging task for me.We don't find the favorable situation in the public sector due to these factors.
1.Lack of resources for teaching and learning.
2. Lack of infrastructure at schools.
3. Unmotivated staff/untrained teachers.
4. Lack of or no interest in parents' involvement in school.
5. Lack of awareness about education in society.6. Political influence in education, especially in the public sector.
As an individual, it was a big task for me to change something, but I didn't lose my hope and started working on it and decided to focus on quality teaching that makes my students enhance their skills and motivates them for more learning and makes them capable enough for gaining better education opportunities. So I decided to start with some classroom conditions like cleaning and decorating the class with some charts and colored papers and used the recycling material in the class. Then the second step was to make effective planning with limited resources that are available and low-cost resources.
In the class of 9th, there is a topic of "letter writing."I started my class with a starting activity, and then I explained to my students how to write a letter about the layout of a letter with all kinds of letters
.Then I gave them a white A4-size paper with an envelope to each student and told them to write a letter of their own choice. I gave them 20 minutes to write and helped them to write while supervising the class and circulating myself in the class, and I instructed them to keep this letter in the English book inside.
The next day I said to them, "Take your letter and reach at the group in a line."They all moved in the ground line-wise where I had already placed a postbox, which I made with the used carton box by wrapping the cover. So I directed all my students to post their letters and consider that this area is a post office and they are here for posting the letters.
Then you believe that everyone participated in the activity and enjoyed it a lot and learned well. This was an activity that made students' minds turn towards learning. After that, I made so many changes in my school, such as
- Student body council..
2.Morning Assembly Presentation. - Science lab activity.
4.ICT integration with subjects.
5.Students organized seminars and workshops.
Conclusion:
As a teacher, we can play an important role in the lives of students and make them engage with effective learning and motivate them towards new-era education styles, even with a lack of scarce resources or difficulties with the execution of activity-based classes in the public sector.Good planning can make it possible to change the negative behavior towards learning and mold it to the positive.
Thank you.
