Using Affordable Digital Tools to Boost Learning in Under-Resourced Schools
Many schools in underprivileged areas face some pretty big challenges:
- Not enough trained teachers to meet demand
- Outdated teaching materials and resources
- Infrastructure that isn’t up to mark
- Low student engagement and unsatisfactory learning outcomes
But digital tools, when chosen carefully and implemented well, can help tackle these issues. They can open doors to quality content, provide support for teachers, and create more engaging learning experiences for students.
Here are some examples of tools we can consider:
- Offline e-learning platforms (like Kolibri and RACHEL)
- Low-cost tablets and smartphones preloaded with educational material
- Engaging radio lessons (interactive radio instruction)
- SMS-based learning and communication between parents and teachers
- Open-source apps that promote foundational literacy and numeracy (e.g., Feed the Monster , Adamjee Coaching and Khan Academy Kids)
- Solar-powered technology solutions for areas with limited electricity
When used correctly, affordable digital tools can truly transform educational outcomes in under-resourced primary schools. By matching technology to local needs and contexts, we can work together to make sure all children have fair access to quality education.
What is your opinion regarding this?
