Greetings. I'm Deepti, a primary school educator at Rose Belle North Government School of Mauritius. This year I'm assigned to teach Mathematics, English, French and Social, Scientific and Environmental Education (SSEE) to Grade 3 students. Some years ago I had a Grade 1 student with similar learning difficulties. I implemented diverse teaching methods and strategies to address the issue of recognition. (Ex. I used modeling clay for names and numbers) It didn't work. At times there are other factors that hinder the learning of pupils. In my case- I talked to parents concerned. They consulted an optician where the child was diagnosed with short sightedness. She started to wear glasses.
- I started to include lots of drilling in my class. A particular topic was taught and learned multiple times in various types of lessons:
a. Introductory lesson
b. Development lesson
c. Consolidation lesson
d. Remedial lesson (after revision/ formal assessment)
It worked. Till date she never faced that issue.

What activities do you design to promote creative thinking among your learners?
The development of 21st Century Competencies among young learners will enable them to lay strong foundation for lifelong learning in today's rapidly changing society, where the capacity to learn and adapt is essential.
For example, in my class,
Mathematics - Pupils are given different colours of 2D shapes to create a tangram of their choice.
Languages (English and French) - Pupils create a storymap after reading a story. They retell the story by drawing the characters and events that occurred in the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the story.

RE: Connect to start collaboration for international school projects
Greetings. I have a suggestion. Let us start a collaborative project by creating and implementing a common lesson. Each one may create an activity (a total of at least 3 activities as per Bloom’s Taxonomy) to assess the learning of students. We will compile them, follow the same process, share our views and discuss here.

Topic: Abstract nouns
Duration: 50 minutes
Pre-requisites: Students already know- Which noun is derived from which verb or adjective.
- The difference between a verb and an adjective.
Aim: To demonstrate ease and willingness to use the English Language.
Goal: To enable learners to formulate abstract nouns from verbs and adjectives.
Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students may be able to: - Identify abstract nouns from a text. (Annex 1)
- Match abstract nouns to verbs and adjectives.

Coronavirus Disease in Mauritius
Coronavirus which is also known as Covid-19 is a communicable disease. This disease is very harmful since it caused many deaths in Mauritius. It was a painful experience for the infected person and his family as they were placed in isolation where they could not meet their closed ones. Many sensitization advertisements were telecasted on the television to make people aware of the sanitary precautions to adopt such as wearing of mask and sanitizing the hands. On 20 March 2020, the Mauritian Government announced the start of complete lockdown. All shops, supermarkets and bakeries were closed. Therefore, many people started cultivation of their own vegetables. For prevention of the spread of the pandemic, the borders were closed. As a consequence, there was a decline in the percentage of tourists coming to Mauritius which led to a slowdown in the economy. Mother Earth started to heal during the lockdown period as there was less pollution. People could realise the importance of their health, family and how to save for the future. Each citizen showed respect towards each other by maintaining social distancing. Many volunteers showed signs of generosity by the distribution of food to the needy ones who in turn expressed their gratitude. With the determination of the citizens who abided by the rules and regulations, today, we have a Covid-19 free population in Mauritius.Anyone willing to collaborate, please inform here.

Through these collaborative projects, we are better preparing our students to face the changing needs of the society. Who knows, one day, our students might work together!
Along with meeting the learning needs, learners will discover diverse cultures around the world.Regarding my project on "Abstract nouns", I have already finalised 2 activities to assess the learners.
As per Bloom's Taxonomy, the
1st Activity - (1. Knowledge) - will enable learners to recall the basics of abstract nouns.
2nd Activity - (2. Comprehension) pending ?
3rd Activity - (3. Application) - will enable learners to apply their knowledge to solve a crossword where they will score marks.@Sanjay-Kumar-1 Grateful if you could design the 2nd activity.
Once done, we'll implement the project.
Other colleagues who teach English Language may implement the same and share their views too.Thank you.

RE: Stress-management for students (and teachers): activities to reduce stress (new ideas each week!)

I have been teaching my group of students since 2021 now. We are able to understand each other. This bonding has been our strength to face any challenge in our teaching and learning environment. To cope with stress, we have daily rituals.- Breathing activity - Pupils practice deep breathing between lessons.
- Humour - We bring humour at a given time of the day. At times it emerges during a specific lesson. For example, I remember once in a French class, when doing a lesson on syllables with sound a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rClQRR1bUYY pupils were actively engaged in the activity without any stress even though they were assessed informally.
At another instance, in an English class, while doing a lesson on "Superheroes", a student told me, "Teacher, you know, I'm Spiderman, my father is Superman and my mother is Wonder woman!" We all laughed and felt re energized and motivated again to continue the lesson. - Being connected to nature - On a rotation basis, students water plants in the classroom. We have created a nature corner. As @MJANKb9ddefc9b1 shared that "...being in nature is a great stress reliever..." Indeed it's true. I have myself experienced relief whenever i watered or trimmed the plants. As goes the saying, "Nature is the purest portal to inner-peace." Being connected to nature, will definitely calm our mind and will help us to cope with stress.
- Setting rules and be all ears to students - By clearly communicating do's and don'ts to students, lots of stress have been reduced. I do not have to raise my voice to bring order back into my classroom. Students know what they are allowed and not allowed to do in class or at school. Well, they are kids after all. Even if they omit, their peers will politely remind them to behave.
By being all ears to my students i can better scaffold them in their learning. Hence they do not have the stress of not knowing. They slowly work on their weaknesses. Feedback to parents are given on a regular basis via their respective notebook. Therefore, at home parents help their children to improve. - Energizer song - Pupils usually kick start their day by singing and dancing on an Energizer song. They forget their stress and feel happy. I witnessed that pupils learn with their emotions. Once they cheer up after the energizer song, they stay with me body, mind and heart. Thus teaching and learning becomes easier.
