In my experience, a combination of verbal and written feedback, both individual and general, works best depending on the context and student needs. One memorable moment was when I consistently gave specific, encouraging feedback to a student who lacked confidence in writing. Over time, she began to take more risks and eventually became one of the most improved in class all because she started to believe in her abilities. I try to balance correction with encouragement by focusing on what the student did well first, then gently guiding them through areas for improvement using phrases like “Next time, try…” or “You’re on the right track, and here’s how to take it further.” I also encourage reflection by asking students to set small goals based on the feedback they receive. Many of them do act on it, especially when they see that it’s meant to support their growth, not just point out mistakes. Creating a classroom culture where feedback is seen as a learning tool rather than criticism has truly helped my students grow in both skill and confidence.
